One of the most remarkable stories of a Croatian immigrant and an American war hero. 🇭🇷🇺🇸

Peter Tomich, born Petar Herceg Tonić in the village of Prolog near Ljubuški, emigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, where his name was changed to Peter Tomich. He later enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

On December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Tomich was serving aboard the USS Utah. As the ship began to sink, he remained at his post in the engineering spaces, ensuring the boilers remained operational long enough for many of his fellow sailors to escape. Fully aware that he would not survive, he chose to stay behind, sacrificing his own life to save others.

For his extraordinary courage and selfless sacrifice, Peter Tomich was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States.

Yet his story did not end there. Because his name had been changed after immigrating to America, the U.S. military was unable to locate any living relatives for decades. As a result, the Medal of Honor could not be presented to his family for more than sixty years.

After years of research and an extraordinary chain of events, his relatives in Herzegovina were finally identified. In September 2006, aboard the USS Enterprise during its visit to Split, Croatia, the Medal of Honor was finally presented to his nephew, Srećko Herceg64 years after it had first been awarded.

Peter Tomich's story is more than a tale of military heroism. It is a story of courage, selfless sacrifice, and an enduring legacy. It reminds us that true heroes are never forgotten, even when it takes decades for history to reunite them with their families.

Heroes may serve one nation, but their courage belongs to the world.
